Guild hosts craft beer conference Aug. 8

The nonprofit San Diego Brewers Guild will host a Craft Beer Con at 11 a.m. Aug. 8 at MiraCosta College’s San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. The annual half-day conference discusses trends in the local craft beer industry and includes three education tracks, a trade show and beer tastings that start at 4 p.m. Speakers from well-known San Diego breweries will participate in panel discussions. Lagoon foundation

to hold Kids Gala

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation holds a Kids Gala from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Discovery Center, 1580 Cannon Road. The family-friendly event will feature a magic show, a raptor presentation, a visit from Iron Man and a DNA bracelet craft along with a virtual reality superhero experience for ages 8 and older. Light dinner will be served. Kids can be part of a beautification project at the Discovery Center and can paint tiles for a mural to be unveiled at the gala. Tile painting can be done from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Discovery Center. Tiles can be purchased with gala tickets or separately for kids and adults to paint. Tiles must be completed by FridayAug. 4. Betamaxx up next in concert series

Carlsbad’s free TGIF Concerts in the Parks series features Betamaxx with a 1980s rock concert from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 4 at Alga Norte Community Park. Art exhibit on opens

The Escondido Art Association hosts an exhibit on “Consciousness” at the EAA Gallery, 121 W. Gallery holds 20th anniversary show

Distinction Gallery will put on a 20th anniversary show featuring works by 20 artists from around the world. Next week Writers Read group meets at library

The Writers Read group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 in the Fallbrook Library’s community room, 124 S. Mission Road. The event features South L.A. author and PEN Fellow Ron L. Dowell, who will read and discuss his short fiction and poetry collection, “Watts Uprise,” which is “a love letter to the Watts community and the people who define it.” The collection was a finalist in the 2022 Press 53 Award for Poetry and a featured poem in the collection “Compton, An Energy-Fueled Dark Star,” was nominated for a 2021 Pushcart Prize. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside received a $114,000 grant from the Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation to upgrade security at its Townsite location. Golf tournament to feature Kelly Slater

The Brother Benno Foundation will host its fifth annual community Charity Golf Tournament starting at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 1 at Goat Hill Park. The event will help Brother Benno kick off their 40th anniversary celebration. The nonprofit has been helping the area’s poor and unsheltered community members since 1983 with food and services, including a drug and alcohol recovery program. Drive-thru food collection at church

Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church sponsors a drive-thru nonperishable food drop-off from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, August 5 at 17010 Pomerado Road. The groceries will help the Salvation Army replenish its food pantry in Escondido, which distributes groceries to families in need each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. History Museum installs Wall of Fame

The Valley Center History Museum unveiled a Wall of Fame to honor residents past and present in Valley Center and Pauma Valley who have played a significant part in local, state and world history. About 130 portraits will be on display on the wall in a rotating exhibit. Initial honorees include scientists Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the Salk vaccine, and Donald Shiley, inventor of the prosthetic heart valve; Ambassadors Irving Salomon and Julian Nava; Glen Bell Jr., founder of the taco chain bearing his name; and Lee Atwood, head of the Apollo space program.
